What to expect before you come to your first class.
Are classes only for women?
Classes are open to all genders.
Do I need to be fit, strong or flexible to start?
Systema is not about being the biggest, strongest, fastest, fittest or toughest. It is about understanding ourselves and our own capabilities, and moving and responding in a way that reduces tension in ourselves and others. That is what maximises our ability to survive and thrive.
Any fitness level is fine to begin with. Classes are designed so each person trains within their own limits. With regular participation you will build strength and freedom of movement that may surprise you.
If you have particular health or mobility concerns, please contact us first. Private classes may suit your needs better.
Do I need previous martial arts experience?
No martial arts experience is necessary.
Is there an age limit?
Our general classes and workshops are for people aged 18 and over. In future we may run classes or workshops for under-18s and for seniors.
What should I wear?
Clothes you can move comfortably in. We recommend a T-shirt and track pants; leggings are also fine. Please bring a water bottle.
What happens in a typical session?
Every class is different, so it is best to come to a few before making up your mind. One night we might explore movement; another, structure and biomechanics (structure breaking), striking, connection, knife work, sensitivity, groundwork or multiple attackers. Systema applies its principles so widely that no single session, or even a few sessions, can cover everything.
Will there be physical contact?
Yes, physical contact is part of learning Systema. We generally don’t train with mitts or bags.
As set out in our participant agreement, a condition of participation is that you communicate openly with your partners throughout drills and respect their limits and comfort levels. Contact work builds in intensity progressively, so it works with your nervous system and psyche, not against it.
Will I learn how to defend myself?
We can’t make promises or guarantees, and everyone’s experience is different. We are confident, though, that the principles we teach will increase your capacity to respond effectively in high-risk confrontations, and support you in everyday life.
Do you use belts or gradings?
No. Systema is non-competitive. Its purpose is self-preservation, self-protection, self-understanding and self-actualisation rather than winning or dominating others, so there are no belts or rankings. Each person’s progress is measured against themselves.
